From experience- Fashion expolitation

I found an article from the Guardian tweeted by LDNFASHION regarding interns responses to their work within the fashion industry.

It is claimed they felt mistreated to long working hours, ranging from to work from 8.30am to 2am the next morning, and being required to complete core work over a long period without pay.

It was stated that the departments within Alexander McQueen's company had more interns than company employees, which caused them to feel exploited as the business seemed to depend on the Free labour of interns rather than pay them for their work.

Employment Lawyer David McBrid felt this breaches the minimum wage act, as previous staff members claimed they worked 12 hour shifts for other fashion company's over a long period of time without receiving a wage, although McQueen's company argued that they made their expectations very clear and interns were aware of the heavy workload they were required to carry out. They also believe this work ethic is not unusual in the fashion industry.

Alexander McQueen's team also stated further defence points implying that the long working hours required was only during the lead up to the deadlines for collections and fashion weeks, which does not take place all the time.

I can imagine the job being very demanding, and the excessive work load is understandable especially as there are so many close deadlines to meet.
As long as current and future interns are willing to work their hardest I believe that fashion company's should continue their work experience placements.
I think it's great opportunity for people to learn what is required for them in the business, however I do feel that the management of employees and interns needs to be controlled, as well as structured working times for all, and reasonable wages for people who work for the company over a month.

People need to feel happy and safe in their working environment, and working long hours drain's you too a point where you cant complete many tasks. It is possible that work could be completed to a better standard and at a quicker rate if staff were able to have proper breaks and reasonable shifts. If people are satisfied with how they are treated within the company this will act as enough drive for them to appreciate their position and meet the demands as they enjoy the work.

I am taking Copyright laws into account. Just because I'm a regular girl swith very little relevance, doesn't mean I cant respect otheer people's property. These images were taken from http://www.treehillfan.com/gallery which is a great site for One Tree Hill fans so feel free to pay them a visit if your interested. Presumably they were taken on the set of Tree Hill, and there are other amazing images featured on the site. Kind Regards Olivia

This week One Tree Hill's fictional charcter Brooke Penelope Davis has really inspired me to possibly set up a boutique in the future. I read her entire series synopsis in class this morning -_- thats where boredem gets you guys
Im such a GEEK! but Im proud ;) 'Clothes over Bro's is a huge hit on the show...even the slogan has a neat ring to it even if some people think it's a little corny!

The whole idea of having my own little store in an upmarket village, selling couture pieces that are
different to everyone else's current products really excites me. I'm more of an independent worker so the whole sole trader responsibility is a huge benefit for me, not to mention the elegant work otufits, possibly comfortable income, and fancy cars I'll hopefully get to drive.
I'll
have allot of creative time in the summer, especially as Im deleting my facebook! Soo... you could be looking at few sketches and ideas in the works, im keeping it under wraps for now though.
I may even set a few Late summer/winter pre 2011 resolutions, january is just too long to wait. I've been keen on Photography and Graphics since my myspace days, and rather using other people's images I'd love to improve on my own creative skills in other areas and yanoe.. see how it goes. I really need to broaden my skills in HTML, CSS, Blogging, web design etc so I'll see what the holidays brings me.
For now hang tight. I'm hoping as I improve I gain some followers, but there's no rush...everything takes time.

Peace out
